Power brake boosters operate by vacuum to make brake pedal pressure easier to apply.

Failure is caused by old age, excessive heat, or leaking master cylinders, causing the internal diaphragm of the booster to rupture. If you have white smoke coming from your tailpipe, it is usually an indication that the master cylinder is leaking and both the cylinder and power booster will need to be rebuilt or replaced. For this reason some rebuilders only offer the combination of booster and master cylinder.
