Brake Drums and Brake Shoes

Brake drums need to be replaced or resurfaced for one of three reasons:

1. Worn below minimum legal standard (usually .060 below O.E. specifications).

2. Scored by allowing the shoes wear down to the metal.

3. Out of round, usually due to applying the handbrake hard while hot.

Brake shoes are usually available in both bonded and riveted forms, depending on the application.

While brake pads are available in many different qualities and materials, there are usually only two choices available in shoes, economy and premium. Most replacement brake shoes are relined with new friction material.
